E-learning design

De Rijksoverheid

CLIENT - ASSIGNMENT - GOAL

For this case, I worked on an assignment from the Dutch government. In collaboration with the CBRNE program (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive), they were developing an e-learning tool for companies that work with hazardous substances. The goal of the tool was to raise awareness about potential risks and to inform companies about the proper preventive measures they could take.

My task was to design the web pages for this e-learning tool. The visual and functional design needed to be clear, trustworthy, and user-friendly, in line with the informative and serious nature of the Dutch government’s communication style.

The overall objective was to create a visually consistent learning environment in which complex information could be presented clearly, and where users could navigate easily.

CHALLENGES - MY ROLE - PROCESS

The biggest challenge in this project was finding the right balance between visual calmness and informative clarity. The content was complex and often technical, and the target audience was diverse, ranging from safety coordinators to logistics managers. The design had to look professional, yet be accessible to a broad user group.

As a web designer, I collaborated closely with subject matter experts, developers, and communication advisors. I began by analyzing the wireframes and content structure. Based on this, I designed several visual concepts that aligned with the government’s brand guidelines, with extra attention paid to readability, hierarchy, and interaction.

Throughout the process, I incorporated iterative feedback moments with stakeholders. I presented design proposals in different stages, and refined them based on content-specific input and user testing.

RESULTS - IMPACT - REFLECTION

The final result was a clear and accessible e-learning tool that fully matched the Dutch government’s visual identity. My design served as the foundation for the final digital environment and ensured the content was presented in a structured and comprehensible way.

The tool was positively received by both the client and its end users. Thanks to the thoughtful design, it became easier to communicate complex and sensitive information about hazardous materials in a calm and organized manner, contributing to both learning outcomes and overall safety awareness.

From this project, I learned how important it is to translate complex information into a clear and structured design. I also gained valuable experience working within the strict frameworks of a large governmental organization, where reliability, accessibility, and usability are key.
